KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — A wave of voices filled the air in downtown Kuala Lumpur today as hundreds of Malaysians came together, not just to protest — but to be heard. The ‘Perhimpunan Turun Anwar’ rally, organised by PAS Youth, brought in a crowd that started gathering as early as 10am around the iconic Sogo shopping mall.
By late morning, the crowd had grown steadily — people in black clothing waving Palestinian flags and chanting phrases like “Turun Anwar” and “Turun Hari Ini.” The energy was undeniable, even from bystanders who stopped to witness the moment unfold.
The Masjid Jamek area also saw smaller yet equally passionate gatherings. Many brought up their concerns over current issues, including the Sabah political controversy, demanding accountability and leadership change — notably calling for the resignation of Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
At various points in the city, people from different walks of life gathered with a shared goal: to reach Dataran Merdeka by 2pm. Young leaders from PAS were seen moving through the crowd, helping coordinate, checking in on safety, and updating attendees about the schedule. The rally was organised, yet emotional — charged with frustration, hope, and the need for change.
So far, the event has remained peaceful. Police maintained a strong presence near key locations, including Masjid Negara and the Masjid Jamek LRT station, where officers directed attendees to stay out of traffic and walk safely. Access points were closely monitored, yet there was no report of violence or arrests.
Chants of “Hidup Rakyat!” and “Turun Anwar!” rang out in waves, occasionally met with shout-outs from rallygoers declaring their states — “Kedah!” “Johor!” “Melaka!” — a powerful reminder that this gathering represents voices from across the country.
The march to Dataran Merdeka is expected to climax in the afternoon with speeches from several prominent figures, including PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and a much-anticipated address by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at 5pm.
For many, this rally is more than a protest. It’s a declaration of dissatisfaction, unity, and a demand for a different Malaysia.
