In response to the ongoing disruption of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway due to relentless rains and waterlogging, railway authorities have stepped in with a much-needed lifeline: a special train service from Budgam to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra.
Launched on Friday, this dedicated service will run daily for 15 days, starting from September 19 to October 3, 2025, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for thousands of stranded passengers. With road links crippled, this rail option comes as a blessing to residents, pilgrims, and travelers affected by the unpredictable weather.
A senior official confirmed that comprehensive arrangements have been put in place to ensure smooth operations. The move follows repeated appeals from locals and the administration, prompting Northern Railway to swing into action. The train service is operating under the leadership of Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar, along with Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal and Senior Divisional Operations Manager Arish Bansal.
Previously, a similar service had been launched between Katra and Sangaldan, but it was halted due to rain-related road damages. Recognizing the urgent need for a reliable transport option, the new service now connects Banihal to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, halting at Reasi, Bakkal, Dugga, Sawalkot, Sangaldan, Sumber, and Khari.
Train No. 04688 will depart Banihal at 11:00 AM, reaching Katra at 1:30 PM. The return train, Train No. 04687, will leave Katra at 1:45 PM and arrive back in Banihal by 4:10 PM, following the same route.
Railway officials emphasized, “The safety and convenience of passengers is our top priority. This special train ensures that no one is left behind during this difficult time.”
This is more than just a train – it’s a symbol of hope and unity.
While roads may be shut, the spirit of service remains wide open. In moments of crisis, such swift action reflects not just infrastructure but humanity. For the elderly visiting shrines, students returning home, or workers trying to make ends meet—this train carries more than passengers; it carries compassion.
