Australia’s highest court has delivered a decisive verdict, blocking Russia from constructing a new embassy just a few hundred meters from Parliament House in Canberra. The unanimous ruling by the High Court of Australia upheld a 2023 law that cancelled Russia’s lease over national security concerns — a move that underscores the nation’s firm commitment to protecting its sovereignty and democratic integrity.
Russia had secured the 99-year lease in 2008 for A$2.75 million ($1.79 million), intending to build a new embassy to replace its existing one in Griffith, a Canberra suburb. Construction had begun but was left incomplete when the Australian government intervened. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese explained that the decision to revoke the lease was based on “very clear security advice” regarding potential risks of having a new Russian presence so close to Parliament House.
Moscow challenged the law, arguing that the Australian parliament had overstepped its constitutional authority. However, the High Court ruled that the Home Affairs Act 2023 lawfully invoked parliament’s constitutional power to reclaim land on “just terms.” The judgment confirmed that while Russia is entitled to compensation, the government’s action was within its rights to prioritize national safety.
Attorney-General Michelle Rowland applauded the ruling, emphasizing Australia’s unwavering resolve: “Australia will always stand up for our values and we will stand up for our national security.”
