Beijing Condemns US Tariffs as ‘Repaying Kindness with Resentment,’ Warns of Global Instability

BEIJING, March 7 – China has strongly criticized the United States over proposed tariffs, warning that such actions could undermine global stability and push the world towards a dangerous “law of the jungle.”

Speaking at a press conference, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi denounced Washington’s approach, particularly in light of Beijing’s cooperation in tackling the fentanyl crisis in the US. He cautioned that imposing tariffs “without reason” would amount to “repaying kindness with resentment.”

“There are around 190 countries in the world,” Wang stated. “If every nation prioritized its own interests above all else and relied solely on power and status, the world would regress into chaos.”

Wang also urged diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine, emphasizing that “conflict has no winners, and peace has no losers.” He reiterated China’s support for any initiatives aimed at restoring stability.

The remarks were made on the sidelines of China’s annual “Two Sessions” political meetings, where discussions have been overshadowed by concerns over the shifting policies of the new US administration, which Beijing sees as disrupting the global order.

As tensions escalate, China’s warning highlights growing fears of economic and geopolitical turmoil should protectionist policies take precedence over international cooperation. — AFP
