Srinagar — In a much-needed gesture of relief and support, the Central Government has sanctioned 5,061 houses for Jammu and Kashmir under a special project of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G). The initiative is aimed at rehabilitating families in rural areas whose homes were devastated by natural calamities such as floods and landslides in recent months.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, while announcing the approval, extended heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for responding swiftly to the crisis.
“I am grateful to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Hon’ble Union Minister of Rural Development Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Ji for sanctioning the construction of 5,061 houses which were damaged due to the recent natural calamities across rural areas of J&K,” said LG Manoj Sinha. “This approval under the special project of PMAY-G will bring back safety and stability in the lives of thousands of households. A new home will enable the families to regain the economic stability, significantly improving the family’s well-being.”
According to officials in the Rural Development Department, the construction of the homes will begin immediately and be treated as a top priority. The aim is to ensure early rehabilitation for families who have been left vulnerable and displaced by nature’s fury.
Beyond the immediate shelter needs, the scheme is expected to have a multiplier effect on rural development by generating construction-related local employment, thereby helping the local economy recover alongside the people.
The response from the ground has been overwhelmingly positive. Local panchayat leaders and residents have hailed the move as a lifeline for affected families, calling it a “timely and compassionate” step during a phase of widespread despair.
