Dubai Runners Beat the Heat at the City’s First “Mallathon”

In Dubai, where summer temperatures can make the streets feel like an oven, runners have found a refreshing new way to stay active — by hitting the malls instead of the pavement.

On August 1, the city introduced the Dubai Mallathon — a month-long fitness movement turning nine of the city’s shopping malls, including the iconic Dubai Mall, into air-conditioned running tracks every morning in August. Doors open early at 7 a.m., inviting both casual walkers and serious runners to escape the blistering heat while staying fit.

Weekdays have a relaxed, “move at your own pace” atmosphere, but weekends turn competitive with official 2.5 km, 5 km, and 10 km races. Medals, prizes, and bragging rights are on the line — and the finish line is often just steps away from the food court.

“The response from all classes of society has been overwhelming,” shared Fawzia Faridoon, Head of Community Events at the Dubai Sports Council. “It’s a beautiful way to bring people together for health, fitness, and community spirit.”

For many, this initiative is more than just about fitness — it’s about reclaiming the joy of movement in a season when stepping outside can feel unbearable.

“I often want to go for a run in the evenings, but the heat makes it almost impossible,” said Aswati Vadakkeppattu, who usually sticks to indoor treadmills during the summer. “An initiative like this, inside the mall, is wonderful. It’s social, fun, and motivating.”

The Dubai Mallathon is proof that even in extreme weather, the city can find innovative ways to keep its residents active, connected, and moving forward — quite literally.
