JAKARTA, June 25 — In a defining move toward energy independence and environmental responsibility, Indonesia has announced plans to build its very first nuclear power plant by 2034. The goal? To break free from overdependence on fossil fuels and build a sustainable energy future for generations to come.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia shared the news during the 2025 Jakarta Geopolitical Forum, highlighting that this isn’t just another infrastructure project—it’s a national priority. “We’ve carefully laid out the roadmap,” he said. “By 2034, Indonesia must have a nuclear power plant. It’s not just about power generation—it’s about shaping our future.”
The plant will be modest by global standards—producing around 500 megawatts—but symbolically massive. It will be built in two parts: one in Sumatra and the other in Kalimantan, with each contributing 250MW to the national grid.
Bahlil also revealed that both Russia and Canada have shown strong interest in becoming Indonesia’s partners in this ambitious venture. “As long as the relationship is built on mutual benefit and trust, we welcome collaboration from any country,” he emphasized.
This nuclear push is part of Indonesia’s broader 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Work Plan, which envisions an additional 69.5 gigawatts of new power capacity—most of it from clean and low-emission sources. As the country races to meet rising energy demands from rapid industrialization, nuclear energy is expected to play a crucial supporting role.
But the vision doesn’t stop there. Indonesia is also focused on hitting its net-zero emissions target by 2060. Introducing nuclear power is a bold, necessary stride in that direction—underscoring the nation’s commitment to climate action, energy security, and a better tomorrow.
