Jhelum River Declared in Flood: Kashmir on Alert After Days of Rainfall

SRINAGAR, August 27, 2025 – The relentless rainfall over the past few days has pushed the Jhelum River in South Kashmir beyond its danger threshold, forcing authorities to officially declare a flood situation in the region.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, around 2:30 AM, water levels at Sangam in Anantnag district crossed the critical 21.66-foot mark — a point that triggers automatic flood declarations according to the Flood Control Division. The rise comes after non-stop rain from the night of August 25 through to the 27th.

An official notification stated, “Due to continuous heavy rainfall and increased inflow in River Jhelum, we have declared a flood at the Sangam gauge site after water levels rose beyond the danger mark.”

This situation has put lives, livelihoods, and homes at risk — a reminder of how quickly nature’s calm can turn into a crisis. Communities along the riverbanks, especially in low-lying areas, are now on edge, watching the waters with worry.

Meanwhile, in Srinagar, the river is also swelling, with the Jhelum at Ram Munshi Bagh crossing alert levels. While it has not yet hit the danger mark in the city, the situation is being closely monitored. Authorities are not taking any chances.

Field teams are actively stationed at key points, equipped with contingency plans in case things worsen. The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir has issued a firm advisory: people must stay away from water bodies and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly near the river.

For those in affected areas, help is just a call away. Emergency helpline numbers have been activated. Residents are urged to contact 112 or 6005953255 in case of any distress or urgent assistance.

This is a moment for the community to come together, stay alert, and support one another. The next few hours will be crucial as the region watches the skies and the riverbanks.
