LISBON, Sept 5 — What began as a scenic evening ride through Lisbon’s iconic hills turned into an unspeakable tragedy. A funicular — one of the city’s treasured symbols — veered off its steep track on Wednesday evening, crashing into a building with devastating force. Sixteen people lost their lives. Among them were tourists who had come to experience the magic of the Portuguese capital.
Today, Portugal is in mourning. Flags are flying at half-mast. Candles flicker quietly on sidewalks. Flowers, notes, and silent prayers line the cordoned-off area where the yellow Glória funicular still rests on its side, crumpled against a building in Bairro Alto — one of Lisbon’s most visited neighborhoods.
The crash has left deep scars not just on families but on the soul of the city itself.
A Diverse, Global Tragedy
Among the 16 victims were five Portuguese citizens. Two South Koreans and a Swiss national have also been officially identified. Police believe — with a high level of certainty — that the deceased also include two Canadians, a German, a Ukrainian, and one American.
Personal belongings, witness accounts, and phone messages sent moments before the crash have helped investigators build a clearer picture of who was lost.
Survivors in Shock
More than 20 others were injured, five of them critically. Among the injured are at least 11 foreign nationals from countries including Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, South Korea, Morocco, and Cape Verde.
A heartbreaking report confirms that a German man died while his wife remains in critical condition. Their 3-year-old child survived with minor injuries. Emergency officials withheld specific nationalities but confirmed the child’s injury.
“Like a Cardboard Box”
Eyewitnesses described the horror. One woman told SIC TV that the impact was so violent, the train crumpled “like a cardboard box.” The vehicle, which typically carries around 40 passengers, was operating on one of the steepest tracks in the city when the accident occurred.
Mayor Carlos Moedas, visibly shaken, called it “a tragedy our city has never seen.” The usually vibrant hilltop district fell into a stunned silence as investigators in blue gloves combed through the wreckage.
Maintenance Under Scrutiny
Carris, the city’s public transport operator, insisted that all safety and maintenance protocols had been “scrupulously respected.” The funicular had been maintained by the same contractor for 14 years, with full servicing done in 2022 and routine checks conducted last year.
Still, questions mount. Lisbon prosecutors have opened a formal investigation into what went wrong. As a precaution, city authorities have suspended all other funiculars while comprehensive safety inspections are carried out.
