Malaysia and Vietnam Strengthen Ties Through Digital Economy Pact

KUALA LUMPUR: In a significant step toward a more connected and digitally empowered Southeast Asia, Malaysia and Vietnam are preparing to finalize a crucial agreement to deepen cooperation in the digital economy.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo shared that both countries are working closely on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), expected to be officially signed by August. This collaboration marks more than just a diplomatic gesture—it signals a commitment to mutual growth in an increasingly digital world.

“The MOU will focus on some of the most vital areas in today’s tech-driven landscape—digital transformation, innovation, research and development, emerging technologies, as well as digital skills and literacy,” Gobind said, following a productive meeting with Vietnam’s Science and Technology Minister, Nguyen Manh Hung, during his visit to Malaysia on May 27.

Gobind emphasized that this partnership goes beyond policy—it’s about people and progress. “Our collaboration with Vietnam, especially in the areas of cybersecurity and 5G, opens the door for stronger national resilience, regional stability, and economic growth that benefits both our nations,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

This agreement reflects a shared vision: preparing both countries not only to navigate the challenges of a digital future but to lead in it—together.
