Opposition Set to Challenge Government as J&K Assembly Autumn Session Begins Tomorrow

As the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly gears up for its autumn session beginning tomorrow, political tensions are set to rise. Opposition parties are preparing to confront the ruling National Conference (NC)-led government on a series of issues — from governance lapses and unfulfilled promises to the long-standing demand for statehood and reservation policies.

Leader of Opposition, Sunil Sharma, made it clear that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plans to hold the government accountable for what he termed as a “betrayal of electoral promises.” Sharma accused the ruling party of failing to deliver on commitments such as 200 free units of electricity, 12 LPG cylinders per household, and new employment avenues for the youth.

“The government promised one lakh jobs for the youth during elections, but those promises remain just words on paper. We will demand to know what has been done for the youth of Jammu & Kashmir in the past year,” Sharma said, as reported by KNO.

Meanwhile, smaller opposition groups like the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), People’s Conference (PC), and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) are expected to raise concerns over statehood restoration, reservation rationalisation, and issues directly impacting the region’s stability and identity.

However, the Assembly Secretariat has rejected a resolution submitted by Sajad Gani Lone, President of the People’s Conference, seeking the restoration of J&K’s statehood — stating that the matter is currently sub judice.

On the legislative front, the government plans to introduce three key bills — amendments to the Jammu & Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, and the Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017, along with the Jammu & Kashmir Shops and Business Establishment Bill, 2025.

The upcoming session will also witness significant participation from members, with 450 questions, 13 private members’ bills, and 55 private members’ resolutions already submitted to the Assembly Secretariat. Additionally, 33 bills pending from the previous session will be prioritized on October 28, designated as the day for private members’ resolutions.

The Business Advisory Committee of the Assembly is set to meet today at 3:00 PM in the Speaker’s office to allocate discussion time for government bills and related matters — a step aimed at ensuring structured debate and accountability.

In the coming days, all eyes will be on the Assembly floor as opposition voices grow louder, demanding answers and action. The people of Jammu & Kashmir — weary of promises and waiting for progress — hope this session brings more than just political theatrics. They seek real solutions, transparency, and trust restored in governance.
