PM Inaugurates Z-Morh Tunnel in Ganderbal, Paving the Way for All-Weather Connectivity to Ladakh

Sonamarg, Jan 13: In a momentous move to enhance connectivity and boost tourism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the highly anticipated Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg, situated in the heart of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. The 6.5 km long tunnel, strategically located near the Gagengar area along the Srinagar-Leh Highway, marks a significant milestone for the region.

The Z-Morh Tunnel, dedicated to the nation, is a pivotal infrastructure project aimed at ensuring year-round access between the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region. The tunnel, along with a 5 km approach road, is designed to provide all-weather connectivity to the famous tourist destination of Sonamarg, making it accessible throughout the year, even in extreme weather conditions.

The Prime Minister personally inspected the tunnel, interacting with the workers and authorities involved in the project. He was accompanied by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and several Union Ministers, all of whom played a vital role in the success of this project.

The Z-Morh Tunnel, part of a strategic initiative, is a bi-directional tunnel equipped with an escape tunnel for safety. The total cost of the project is estimated at ₹2,700 crore, and it is being developed by Apco Infratech Pvt Ltd. This development is expected to transform the region’s infrastructure, stimulate tourism, and bolster the economy.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister is scheduled to address a public gathering in Sonamarg, underscoring the significance of the project for the region’s future development. The completion of the Z-Morh Tunnel is set to be a game-changer, providing seamless connectivity and ensuring a more resilient infrastructure for Kashmir and Ladakh.
