Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir – What should have been a serene day in the heavenly meadows of Baisaran turned into a nightmare on Tuesday, as a terrorist attack shattered the calm and joy of visiting tourists. At least one precious life has been lost, and several others are fighting for theirs after gunmen opened fire in one of Kashmir’s most beloved tourist spots.
In the lush green stretches of Baisaran, often called “mini-Switzerland” for its beauty, families and groups were enjoying horse rides and soaking in the majestic views. Suddenly, the laughter was pierced by the terrifying sound of gunfire. Eyewitnesses recall the horror vividly—screams, chaos, and desperate attempts to find safety.
“It felt like a dream turned into a horror movie in seconds,” said one local pony handler, his voice trembling. “Children were crying, people were running. We never expected such brutality in this peaceful place.”
Security officials believe that two to three militants, dressed in army fatigues, infiltrated the area and began shooting indiscriminately. One tourist succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital, and many others remain critically wounded. Their names have not yet been released, but the emotional weight of the tragedy is already felt deeply.
The attack comes just weeks before the annual Amarnath Yatra, where Pahalgam plays a crucial role as one of the base camps. The timing, during peak spring tourism, is being seen as a deliberate effort to stir fear and disrupt peace in the Valley.
The Resistance Front (TRF), linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility, according to initial reports.
Security forces swiftly launched a search operation, combing through the dense forest trails surrounding Baisaran. Top officials from the Army and Police, including counter-terrorism units, are on the ground, overseeing both rescue and combing operations.
Leaders from across Jammu and Kashmir expressed grief and outrage.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha called the attack “despicable” and promised that justice will be swift. “The perpetrators will not go unpunished,” he assured on X.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah posted: “I’m shocked beyond belief. This attack on our visitors is an abomination. The perpetrators are animals. My deepest sympathies go to the bereaved families.”
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti also condemned the act, calling it cowardly and unacceptable.
As Kashmir mourns, the message from the people is clear: violence has no place in this land of beauty and hospitality. The Valley, known for its warmth and generosity, stands united in grief—and in resilience.
May peace return, and may those who seek to destroy harmony be brought to justice.
