In a recent social media post, President Trump expressed frustration with China over its refusal to accept Boeing aircraft, calling it another example of China taking advantage of the United States during the ongoing trade war.
“Boeing should hold China accountable for not accepting the beautifully crafted planes they promised to buy. This is just a small glimpse of the broader issues China has caused for the U.S. over the years,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He also mentioned the ongoing issue of fentanyl, stating, “Fentanyl continues to flood into our country from China through Mexico and Canada, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans. It must stop now!”
Boeing’s CEO, Kelly Ortberg, told CNBC that the company is struggling to deliver aircraft to China due to the tariffs. Some 737 Max jets that were originally headed for China are now being flown back to the U.S.
In the midst of these tensions, the U.S. has imposed a 145 percent tariff on China, while offering a temporary 90-day pause on tariffs for other trade partners, setting it at a lower 10 percent rate.
This week, Trump acknowledged the impact of the steep tariffs he had placed on China, which now include a 125 percent tariff in addition to the existing 20 percent rate. He hinted at a change in tone, expressing willingness to work with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating that his administration has been in talks with China every day.
However, China’s Ministry of Commerce contradicted Trump’s remarks, with spokesperson He Yadong stating that any claims of active trade negotiations were “groundless” and had no factual basis. The White House has yet to respond to China’s denial of ongoing talks.
