In a moment of diplomatic clarity and composure, former Foreign Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla addressed concerns over the sudden imposition of steep 50% tariffs on Indian goods by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking to a gathering in Virginia, Shringla acknowledged the challenges ahead but reassured that India is actively working to soften the blow.
“From midnight tonight, we’ll face 50 per cent customs duties on exports to the U.S.,” Shringla said, highlighting the serious impact this will have on labour-intensive sectors like agriculture, seafood, textiles, gems, machinery, and handicrafts. “But we’re not standing still. We’re already working to minimise the damage,” he emphasized.
Shringla pointed to India’s expanding web of global trade partnerships as a buffer against this setback. “We have Free Trade Agreements with Australia, the UAE, the UK, and we’re nearing one with the European Union,” he shared. “These agreements open up new avenues for us to divert exports and keep our economy moving forward.”
Despite the tariff storm, Shringla’s tone was far from pessimistic. He emphasized the enduring strength of India-U.S. relations. “We share one of the most comprehensive and multi-faceted relationships with the United States,” he noted. “Even with the current turbulence, the foundation is strong.”
He also warmly welcomed the appointment of Sergio Gor as the new Ambassador of India, calling it “a positive signal for the future of diplomatic cooperation.”
Looking ahead, Shringla expressed hope for progress. “We’re optimistic about concluding a Free Trade Agreement with the United States that benefits both sides. President Trump and Prime Minister Modi have shared a warm rapport since Trump’s first term, with landmark events like Howdy Modi and Namaste Trump symbolizing that bond.”
While the 50% tariff — the highest of its kind — will affect nearly two-thirds of India’s trade with the U.S., India is not backing down. Shringla’s message was clear: adaptability, strategic partnerships, and resilience will guide India through the storm.
